What to do if your friend or family member dies in Dubai

1 In the unfortunate event your spouse dies you must first call the police by dialing 999. They will fill out a report and transfer the body to a hospital to determine cause of death and issue the initial death certificate (fee Dhs60).

2 Take the certificate, with your spouse’s original passport and visa to the police station where they will issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) addressed to Al Baraha Hospital.

3 Take all these documents to Al Baraha Hospital’s Preventive Medicine Department, where the official death certificate will be issued. If you plan on returning the body home, you will need to have the certificate translated.

4 Once the official death certificate has been issued, you must register the death with the Ministry of Health (fee Dhs20), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (fee Dhs50) and the Department of Naturalisation and Residency (fee Dhs100).

5 If you are taking the body back to your home country contact DNATA (04 211 1111) and the airline you want to use to reserve the space.

6 Contact your embassy. They will cancel your spouse’s passport and issue an NOC for taking the body home.

7 Get an NOC from Cargo Village Police Station and submit all the documents to the DNATA export office in Cargo Village.

8 DNATA will process all the required documents (they will need seven copies of each).

9 Before the body can leave the country, it must be embalmed at Al Maktoum Hospital Mortuary (fee Dhs1,000). Get an NOC from the police to allow this.

10 Cargo fees will cost anything between Dhs1,000 and Dhs10,000 and a coffin about Dhs750.

It is possible for expats to have a Christian or Muslim burial in Dubai.

The Christian cemetery (04 337 0247) is located at Jebel Ali. Burial fees are Dhs1,100 for adults and Dhs350 for children.

Muslim burials must be performed quickly, so the formalities of getting a death certificate and registering the death are done afterwards. Contact the Dubai Municipality Cemetery Office (04 221 5555).

Any person can also be cremated in Dubai, but only in the Hindu tradition. Cremations are carried out by the Hindu Temple in Bur Dubai (04 353 5334) and cost Dhs2,500.

tip: It is important you have a will, particularly as you are in a foreign country and your rights may not be the same.
